Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of collaborative problem ~ solving with SPM economic background and without SPM economic background on critical thinking and academic performance of lower six students. The study further investigated the effects of collaborative problem solving on interest, preparation and learning style. A quasi-experimental method that employed the 3x2 factorial design was applied in this study. There were 294 students from ten schools were selected randomly and divided into three groups (KPMsl, KPMs2 and KKv). The equivalence of all groups was established using the pre-Cornell test and pre-performance test. Five hypotheses have been tested. MANOVA and ANOVA have been employed tor testing the significant effect in mean score of critical thinking post-test and performance posttest within groups. The results showed that the students in KPMs I group significantly outperformed in their critical thinking mean score. KPMs I also outperformed in interest, preparation and learning style compared to KPMs2 and KKv. KPMs2 also performed quite well in interest compared with KK v. Students in KPMs I group with economic background also outperformed in critical thinking, interest, preparation and learning style. Besides, students in KPMs2 group with economic background also outperformed in academic performance significantly. The findings of this study also show that KPMsl and KPMs2 are effective in enhancing students' performance. However, the finding of critical thinking post-test did not perform better than pre-test, but qualitative responses showed positive results.
