Introduction Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by repetitive upper airway obstructions during sleep, and it might cause cardiovascular complications such as heart failure, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, systemic and pulmonary hypertension. Few data are known about the effects of sleep-related breathing disorders on the cardiovascular system in youth. Objectives To determine ventricular diameters and left ventricular ejection fraction in uncomplicated OSA youth. Study Design Cross sectional study on youth attending sleep clinic who had underwent sleep study (polysomnography) in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia from January 2009 to November 2010. Methodology The consented participants who fulfilled the criterias were interviewed using a questionnaire regarding demographic data, date of polysomnography and their polysomnography result. Afterthat they were sent for echocardiographic assessment focusing on both ventricular diameter at end diastole and left ventricular ejection fraction. Results A total of 32 OSA patients participated in this study with majority of them fell into moderate group, 14 (43.8%) followed by mild group, 11 (34.4%) and 7 (21.9%) in severe group. In our study echocardiographic parameters of right and left ventricular imensions were within normal limits in all participants. We also found that left ventricular ejection fraction were not affected in all group of OSA patients. Conclusions There are no significant correlations between polygraphic events suggestive of sleep related disordered breathing and some echocardiographic parameters of morphology and left ventricular function. However the long term impact is not yet known with longitudinal studies are required to elucidate the clinical significance of these findings.en_US
