Histology and histochemical techniques were used to determine the developmental stages of oocytes, the begining of vitellogenesis and the chemical composition of yolk inclusions formed. Oogenesis is commonly divided into two phases. The first or primary growth phase in H. t;ol.i, involved the cytoplasmic and nuclear changes during oocyte growth. Three stages are recognized, namely the chromatin nucleolus, early and late perinucleolar stages. The second or secondary growth phase involved the rapid growth of oocyte due to the accumulation of yolk via a process called vitellogenesis. Two types of yolks inclusion were formed, "lipid" yolk and "protein" yolk . During the growth of oocyte, the stages that have been classified are the lipid yolk stage and primary, secondary and ~ertiary yolk granule stages. Histochemical studies, indicated that the chemical composition of "lipid" yolk consist of phospholipid and neutral fats. The chemical content of yolk granules initially consist of lipid and protein during the primary and secondary yolk granule stages. However, toward the tertiary yolk granule stage i.e. during the fusion of all the yolk granule when oocyte is reaching maturity, the chemical composition is protein and phospholipid.en_US
