Abstract
This research presents the potential of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) lignin and
modified OPEFB lignin as an adsorbent for Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions in aqueous solutions.
OPEFB lignin was produced by extraction of OPEFB black liquor using sulfuric acid 20
% v/v. Modified OPEFB lignin was produced by reaction of OPEFB lignin with NaOH 1
M. The characterization of OPEFB lignin and modified OPEFB lignin was carried out by
using FT-IR, surface area and average pore diameter analysis, SEM-EDX, CHNS/O,
pHzpc and pHslurry. Results from the analyses proved that modified OPEFB lignin was
successfully produced. The potential of OPEFB lignin and modified OPEFB lignin as
adsorbents for Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions were then investigated using several parameters
such as pH of Cu(II) and Pb(II) solutions, mass of OPEFB lignin and modified OPEFB
lignin, agitation rate, adsorption contact time at three different concentrations (5, 10 and
20 mg L-1) and initial concentration of Cu(II) and Pb(II) solutions at three different
temperatures (27, 37 and 47 °C). pH is the most dominant parameter that affects the
maximum adsorption ability of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions onto OPEFB lignin and modified
OPEFB lignin. The isothermal and kinetic adsorption were investigated using different
concentration of Cu(II) and Pb(II) and adsorption contact time. The adsorption kinetic
experimental data of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions onto OPEFB lignin and modified OPEFB
lignin fitted well with pseudo-second order model. According to Langmuir equation,
modified OPEFB lignin giving highest adsorption capacity to both metals ions compared
to OPEFB lignin.
