Abstract
Medicinal herb is an alternative medicine for some people in society. Many studies and discussions have been done about the use of herbs and how the herb is formulated as medicine. Nevertheless, the issues about from whom and how the knowledge is passed among people in society are rarely discussed. Thus, this study examines traditional medicinal herbs, especially aboufthe use of herbs as medicines in relation to sexual activities, and how the knowledge is passed and spread to people in society. The present study was conducted among Malay people in Kampung Bugis in Riau Island, Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia. As Muslims, the Malays are very susceptible to sensitive matters; like talking about sex which is considered a taboo. ·For them, just like for other Muslims in Indonesia, the discussion about sex before marriage is generally forbidden. Nevertheless, the result of this study shows that the taboo value has been removed among the Malays in Kampung Bugis. Findings from this study indicates that conversations about sex is common and it happens any time and anywhere. From the 25 male and the 25 female respondents taken as samples, it was found that there was transmission of knowledge on sex, from females to males, and vice-versa. The transmission of knowledge did not only happen among the same age group, but also from the elder to the younger and vice-versa. Regarding medicinal herbs, this study also indicates that knowledge transmission is not limited to any particular venue. It was also discovered from this study, that the use of herbs is not restricted to the physical environment of Kampung Bugis.
