The interior design of the heritage buildings has special characteristics. These characteristics represent the nature of the cultural heritage. The complete image of the interior design identity created by the formulation and expression system with a special setting is related to components, rules, and relationships. Peranakan Cina, a significant culture in the value of the architectural and interior design identity in Georgetown, has been facing different types of challenges in response to the needs of the contemporary era. The authenticity of Peranakan Cina style faces the dilemma of extinction due to design, function, and users’ needs to simplification of the interior design. This study aims to investigate the key elements of the interior design of the Peranakan coffee shop in the heritage shophouses in Georgetown City, Penang, Malaysia. The study also aims to examine the integration of the concept of simplicity and complexity of the interior design elements of the Peranakan Cina coffee shop, which can affect the cultural heritage image. The study aims to establish the process of simplicity and complexity in presenting the tangible cultural heritage of the Peranakan Cina coffee shop in the Straits Eclectic shop house, which works as a thirdplace. Qualitative analysis was carried out to obtain the results through semistructured interviews. The interviews included 40 users and 8 experts. Three Peranakan coffee shops selected from the GTWHS as a case study for this research. Moreover, observation, documentation, and site notes were included in the field work as the visual data of the study. Content, phenomenology, and formal analysis were employed to analyse the textual and visual data. Findings revealed that three groups of elements were associated with the characteristics of the thirdplace. The findings also revealed that the simplicity quality is created by the physical environment setting and component, function, and expression systems. The types, levels, and stages of symmetry, repetition, and balance in the overall and in the indetail levels of the patterns reflected different levels of simplicity. The informed simplicity of the interior design elements of the Peranakan Cina coffee shop has positively enhanced the heritage image. The study concluded with the establishment of standards for generating the interior design of the Peranakan coffee shop by minimal elements, rules, and relationships.en_US
