Abstract
This study attempts to examine the extent of use of real options approach
among firms in Malaysia and its relationship with technology postures and technology
sophistication deployed by a firm with regards to environmental uncertainty. A crosssectional
field study was conducted by sending the questionnaire via email, post and
personal distribution. The sectors of industry involved in this research are mainly
manufacturing and IT (Information Technology) firms located around northern
Malaysia. Klang Valley and Shah Alam. A total of 96 cases was analyzed by
statistical software to test the proposed model using moderated regression analysis
()..fR.-\). The findings show that firms practicing real options approach in technology
projects assessment are more likely to emerge as technology leaders with more
sophisticated technology, and this is even more significant when the environment is
very uncertain. It is also found that on average, firms in Malaysia are applying real
options approach at the slightly above average level. These empirical findings have
shown that real options approach is a strategic tool for business-technology strategy
planning especially under highly uncertain environment.
