Abstract
This study was carried out to ascertain the effectiveness of using the Graded Reading module in the learning-teaching environment. This study involved 6 pupils in the Linus programme. In this study, the Graded Reading module puts emphasis on the skills of reading in Malay focusing on the consonant-vocal-consonant vocal patterns. The data for this study was collected and analysed using the pre-test, post-test and during the learning-teaching sessions. The data was analysed in a descriptive way using percentages. The difference in the achievement between the pre test and post test was used to determine the effective measurement after the remedial sessions. The observation approaches used were based on the pupils’ responses, while the teachers’ interviews were based on the qualitative data to determine the suitability and interest on the Linus programme in using the Graded Reading modules as another learning alternative in the mastery of the KVKV patterns in the reading skills. The findings of this study showed that the Graded Reading modules that were assessed have great potential as early learning Malay materials, especially for the Linus pupils who have not mastered the reading skills that they were graded. The implication of this study showed the importance of using guided reading materials by Linus pupils. The use of this module hopes to fulfil the literacy needs of our pupils at the early stage, taking into consideration the cognitive and learning abilities of Linus pupils.
