Abstract
26 December 2004 marks a significant date in the minds of most Achehans when tsunami waves hit Aceh, Indonesia causing massive destruction in some of its district. This catastrophe also destroyed some billboards in the affected areas. Since Graphic Design in Aceh is still not well-developed in comparison with other districts and regions in Indonesia, this research serves to investigate the influence of tsunami in the development of Graphic Design in Banda Aceh. It aims to find out whether the graphic design in Aceh has undergone some changes as a result of the tsunami aftermath and if so, what are the contributing factors towards these changes. This research focuses on billboards erected in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar from January 2007 until March 2008, regardless of their sponsors (the government, NGOs or other bodies). The research methodology used for this purpose is qualitative descriptive. While the techniques used for data gathering are firstly, through observations made in the graphic design industry in Banda Aceh and secondly, through interviews with the owners of the graphic design industry as well as people who are well-versed in this field among them who are lecturers and graphic designers of the newspaper “Serambi Indonesia” and “Aceh Magazine”. Based on the research findings, the billboards available in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar are categorized into five types, namely 1) commercial billboards advertising a particular product that are sponsored by certain industries and for commercial purposes; 2) institution-owned billboards that are sponsored by non-ruling institutions like banks and firms; 3) government-owned billboards that are sponsored by various government departments 4) NGOs-owned billboards that are sponsored by either the local or international NGOs and 5) 35 collaboration between government-owned as well as NGOs-owned billboards. It can be concluded that graphic design and the billboard media in Banda Aceh have undergone a significant development in terms of both the quantity and quality in the post-tsunami era. The contributing factor is that the tsunami catastrophe had resulted in an influx of outsiders into Aceh where initially the doors of Aceh were closed due to the conflict within it. Along with the coming in of outsiders into Aceh, it has directly influenced the development of its graphic design together with technological advancement.
