Abstract
This study is to determine the influence of personality traits, rationality and self- efficacy towards decision-making styles among students, especially in skills training institutes. Besides identifying the dominant personality trait, rationality tendency, self-efficacy level and decision-making styles, this study is also aimed to determine the influence of these three variables on decision-making styles. Through mixed-mode design, quantitative and qualitative data obtained from the samples of 591 students in power electrical engineering certificate programme from eight MARA Skills Training Institute. The samples completed the Big Five Inventory (BFI), Rational-Experience Inventory (REI), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and Maximization Scale. Qualitative data was collected through focus group interviews involving eight respondents. T-test showed no significant differences among different age group of samples for all four variables. Multiple regression analysis indicates that personality traits, rationality and self-efficacy have a significant influence on decision-making style. Self-efficacy was found to have the most powerful influence on decision-making style. Results of qualitative analysis show that the behavioural domain of personality traits, rationality and self-efficacy has the most distinctive influence on decision-making style. This study proved that intrinsic quality such as personality traits, rationality and self-efficacy influence decision-making style regardless of age group. The effects were manifested through behaviour of individuals in various activities. Parties involved with skills training system such as counsellors and instructors need to take into account those aspects in implementing guidance, teaching and training activities in order to produce better quality talent in the future.
