Abstract
This is a descriptive case-study on the importance of communication climate in
organizing work related activities in an organization. The theoretical framework for
describing the communication phenomena is based on the Open Systems Theory and
Weick’s Organizing Theory. The purpose of this study was to examine the interaction
characteristics that develop communication climate and the communication dimensions
that relate to communication climate practices. Dichotomy of interaction characteristics
were used to measure defensive or supportive communication climate practices in
organizing job-related activities. The independent variables of this study are the
communication dimension such as trust, supportiveness, listening in upward
communication, openness in downward communication, participative decision making,
concern for high performance goals, subordinate interaction and external information
processing. While the moderating variable for communication climate is organizational
identification. The variables used to examine its relationship and its effect the
communication climate. A total of 1485 respondents from two homogenous public
organizations were selected. Selection of organisation’s was made based on their high
performance award by Malaysian Government, especially the Prime Minister Awards.
Respondent were selected from all levels of scheme using stratified random sampling
method. Level of analysis used is based on individual’s aggregate perception. Data
were obtained through a set of self administered questionnaire adapted from
established measures by communication researchers. Descriptive and inferential
statistics were used to analyze the data. It was hypothesized that there will be a
significant perception differences between interaction characteristic and type of
communication climate practiced. Communication dimension also were hypothesized to
have a significant correlations and influence the communication climate. It was
predicted that organizational identification moderates communication climate. The
findings revealed that there is a significant perception differences of the interaction
characteristics between employees of the two hospitals. Hospital Kota Bharu, proved to
practice more positive supportive climate compared to Hospital Alor Setar. Results of
correlations test revealed the significant relationship between all communication
dimensions and the communication climate. Results of the stepwise multiple
regressions indicated that the communication dimensions influence 52 percents of the
communication climate. While organizational identification is moderated by the communication climate. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future
research are offered.
