Abstract
Naturalism was first prominently exhibited in the writings of French
authors, especially Edmont Louis de Goncourt, Jules Alfred Huot de Goncourt
and Emile lola. The literary movement appeared at the end of nineteen
century in France and spread to whole Europe and America. Then it reached
Malaysia in the middle of twenty century.
Two novels choosen for this study are Salina and Sungai Mengalir
Lesu by A.Samad Said. This study has three objectives which are interrelated,
firstly to study what extent naturalism exist in Salina and Sungai
Mengalir Lesu, secondly to identify the technique of writing used in the two
novels. Lastly to study how elements of naturalism erode moral effects of the
novels. This study uses periodical approach from Comparative Literature to
identify elements of naturalism in the two novels.
Study shows there are elements of naturalism in Salina and Sungai
Mengalir Lesu. Technique of description and dialogue are commonly used in
the two novels. The elements of naturalism have eroded the moral effect of
the two novels.
