Economic dispatch (ELD) is a way of optimization to dispatch power from the generation facilities to the load with minimum fuel cost. The fuel cost of generation can be represented in the form quadratic equation and this can be solved in numerous method such as Lambda-Iterative method, Gradient method and Newton-Raphson method. However, those mention methods can only be solved when the incremental fuel cost is in the form of piecewise linear. Modern metaheuristic methods such as Particle Swarm Optimisation method (PSO), Genetic Algorithm method (GA) and Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm method (ABC) need to be implemented to solve the problem. In this project, PSO, GA and ABC methods were applied in the MATLAB to solve the ELD. Lastly, the outputs had been analysed and compared among the three algorithms. For 15 unit test system and 20 unit test system, ABC had most stable outcome with the shortest computation time. For IEEE 30 bus system, GA had the most stable outcome however the computation time was not the shortest for GA. PSO outdone GA in term of speed but the overall best performance would be GA.en_US
