Abstract
This study is undertaken to assess the status of the quality of the learning environment in government preschools in Jordan in terms of Space and Furnishing; Personal Care Routines; Language-Reasoning; Activities; Interaction; Program Structure; and Parents and Staff. The study also looked at the strengths and weaknesses of the learning environment. Further, it examined if there were significant differences in the quality based on location of preschools and teacher’s experience and looked for the ways in which the quality of the learning environment could be improved. The design of the study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The population of the study was the government preschools in Jordan. The sample consisted of 250 preschools in 12 provinces in Jordan which were involved in the main quantitative survey, and selected through random stratified sampling. In addition purposive sampling was used to identify eight rural preschools for interview; whilst 19 preschools were observed to get in depth- information about the status of quality in these preschools. The responses from the survey were analyzed using descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations), and correlation. Data from interviews were analysed qualitatively. The findings of this study indicated that the status of the quality of the learning environment is at medium level whereby it was found that two dimensions of ECERS-R were at high levels of quality, namely, interaction and program structure. Moreover, this study also found five dimensions to be at medium level, and these were space and furnishing, personal care routines, language-reasoning, and parents and staff. The findings also revealed that there were no significant differences in the quality of the learning environment based on preschool’s location and based on teacher’s experience.
