Abstract
Fiber mortar is an important building material used nowadays. Therefore
research needs to be carried out in this field. Building material consist of
numerous materials and one of them is fiber mortar. Frond fiber mortar or
mortar is produced from the mixture of cement, sand and frond fiber. This fiber
mortar is low in density or has physically light.
The research was conducted to study the comparison between ordinary
mortar and frond fiber mortar to investigate the characteristic, strength and
durability .
Mortar specimen used in this study were cube specimen and prism. As
many as ten (10) mixtures are made to produce 120 specimens with every 72
cubes, and 48 prisms. This mortar specimen is cast using five percent (5%) and
ten percent (10%) frond fiber. Every specimen was tested on the duration of
7th
, 28th
, 56th and 90th day with 3 specimen for every level.
The different tests conducted on the specimen mortar were workability
test, density test, ultrasonic pulse velocity test, water absorbtion quality test,
compression test, flexural test and oxygen permeability test. All these tests
were carried out to find out the mortar durability, its strength and the quality of 5
percent (5%) and ten percent (10%) of fiber mortar.
The overall tests result shows that fiber has the potential to act as a
useful material in mortar. The combination of the material produced high
compressive strength on the duration 56th and 90th days. The compressive
strength was achieved until 55.0 N/mm2 for 5 % frond fiber and 52.87 N/mm2
for ordinary mortar. This is shows the mortar as a strength light mortar.
To conclude, fiber mortar is a potential material, further research need to
be conducted to investigate the durability performance of fiber mortar in
construction industries.
