Abstract
The objectives of this research were to explore the influence of academic
gifted students' attributes such as self' concept, locus of control, extrovert, and
introvert in working alliance with their mentors. This research also aim to identify
the academic gifted students' attributes profile and demographic aspects. The
research employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The research's
design was ex post facto using correlational and regression methods. The
research was conducted in three phases which involved 767 respondents from
eight premier fully residential schools from Johor and Perak, Malaysia. This
research also was based on Theory of Gifted by Piirto (1999), Theory of
Personality by Rogers (1951) and Jung (1921), Theory of SOCial Learning by
Rotter (1966), and the Concept of Working Alliance by Horvath and Greenberg
(1989).
Descriptive analysis found that the majority of the respondent are male
students, stay with their parents, having more than five siblings, being the eldest,
parents working with the government, parents' education up to degree level,
parents' income more than RM 2,001.00, spending between one to two hours
doing homework and revision, keen to study on their own, like to be an engineer,
and having an interaction with mentor for one to two years. Majority of the
respondent also have high academic self concept, low social self concept,
internal locus of control and introverted.
Finding from Pearson correlation coefficient test showed that there are
significance relationships between academic self concept, social self concept,
extrovert .and introvert with working alliance. A multiple regression equation
revealed that there are significance influences of (i) social self concept and locus
of control toward working alliance (ii) academic self concept, social self concept,
extrovert and introvert toward goal (iii) academic self concept, social self concept,
extrovert and introvert toward task (iv) academic self concept with bond. Paired t
test found gender does not effect working alliance. Findings from one way
ANOVA showed that parents' occupation, level of income, duration of doing
homework, duration of doing revision and period of relationship with mentor and
learning styles do influence the working alliance. Finding from qualitative
research revealed factors such as hostility, fear, intolerate (not empathy),
unconditional acceptance, openness, knowledgeable, skillful and experience
have a strong impact on working alliance. The qualitative research also found
that the majority of respondents have high cognitive ability, easily bored in
school, low social skill, and introvert. The qualitative research also revealed much
preferred mentors' and mentees' attributes and the problems encountered by
school in implementing mentoring. Generally, the findings should be useful for
Ministry of Education especially for school's mentors in implementing activities
that relate to the working alliance in school.
