Abstract
This study is carried out to see the rdationship between the ability to write
essay with the ability to use proper grammar in Bahasa Malaysia. It also proposes
to identify the errors commited by the students, especially among native
speakers. This study also looks )nto the ability of students in using proper
grammar when writing an essay.
450 essay samples ofbahasa Malaysia and 150 sets of grammar test were
analysed in this study. Form four pupils who are native speakers of bahasa
Melayu completed the grammar test. They were chosen from 5 schools in Muar,
Johor Darul Takzim. Each student was required to take a grammar test and later,
wrote an essay for Essay Test A, Essay Test Band Essay Test C. Selected essays
were analysed according to 9 types of errors in grammar and 9 types of sentence
structure. The marking scheme was based on the scheme set globally and on .
analytical scales. The study was carried out among students with High
Achievement Level and those with Lower :Achievement Level .
The statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS PC+) was used to
analysed the data. The data gathered was analysed using the t test and Pearson.
product-moment correlation coefficients. The result of this research shows that
the pupils ability in using proper or correct grammar in Bahasa Malaysia to write an essay is moderate. For grammatical analysed errors involving affixes and
suffixes (Pl) are especially high. This study proves that error in construction of
r
sentence (A2) is high too. It also proves that Students with lower achievement
level perform poorly compared to those with high achievement level.
This study also proves that achievement in essay writing is only at a
moderate level, whereby students with lower achievement level performed at an
"acceptable stage" while those with high achievement level performed at a
moderate stage. It also proves that there is a significant positive relationship
between the students ability to use correct grammar and the overall score of the
essay. The correlation is significant for grammatical errors committed by
students of lower achievement level in writing essays and in the grammatical
test.
As a conclusion, based on the information gathered, it is clear that Malay
students still face difficulty in writing essays. The weakness in the bahasa
Malaysia grammar also affects their ability to write good essays. The results of
this study will enable Bahasa Malaysia teachers to reconstruct their lessons in
order to help students improve in their grammar and easy writing performance
