Abstract
This study is divided into seven chapters. Chapter one deals briefly with the nature and meaning of traditional Malay literature. It clarifies the concept of'what is literature'from the author's and audiences's point of view. Chapter two concerns the development of the first phase of modern Malay literary criticism. The various period concerned are: The Abdullah Munsyi (1839-1854); The Pre-War (1920-1941) and The Post-War (1946-1949). The next chapter examines the writing of Malay literary criticism during the period (1950-1957) with particular reference to the era of The Angkatan Sasterawan 50 (Asas 50). The'Sociological Criticism' during the period 1958-1977 is studied in chapter fou~. The main focus in this chapter was, how the critics advocated socialist realism and why this concept was not suitable for evaluction of Malay literature. Chapter five discusses the~Liberal Criticism' during the same period (1958-1977). Efforts are made to examine the weaknesses of using this method in Malay literary criticism. Chapter six studies the'Psychological Criticism' in Malay literature and how this methodology being succesfully applied in the evaluation of Malay literature.The 'Structural Criticism' is discussed in chapter seven. The main focus of discussion in this chapter was,how this structural concept is objectively applied in Malay literary criticism. The concluding chapter contains a summary of the whole study of literary criticism in Malay literature during the period 1839-1977.
