Abstract
Briefly, this research focuses on the changing consumption patterns among locals in
Penang and its impact on public markets.
Having existed for a long time, markets are often frequented by people of all walks of life
to get their supply of raw food and daily necessities. Of late, there has been a tremendous
change in the modem retailing system that deeply impacts on the changing consumption
patterns among the local community. Hence, consumers now have alternative sources and
more choices with the presence of various types of modern retailers.
In relation to that, this research also aims to examine how far the growth of public markets
in the future is affected by this changing consumption pattern. In addition, various
indicators like the level of education, household income, family-size, consumer age and the
changing eating habits among consumers have been used as yardsticks to see the change
among consumers.
As a result, the findings of this research reflexes that changes in the consumption patterns
among consumers have a direct impact among market goers. However, the change is
trivial and it is of no substitute to the role and importance of the public market in the hearts
of the local community. This is validated by the majority that prefer the public market as
the main channel for raw food without much influence by elements such as the level of
education, income level, eating habits and the like.
Nevertheless, though at its infancy stage, this changing consumer pattern will have its
effects on the entire retailing system in the long run. At this point, the future role of the
public market is still left unknown. Thus, various efforts have to be undertaken to improve
the quality and competitiveness of the public market as to counter the challenges posed by
the modem retailing systems.
In addition, this research also highlights the important role played by the Government in
determining the ideal locations for public markets, number of public markets and sufficient
stalls in each market, various goods sold in markets, quality and also reasonable prices
besides improving the status of dwellers of the public markets. Lastly, appropriate aid
from the Government is also important to foster the growth of the public market and other
forms of petty trading in our country in the future.
