Abstract
The purpose c;>f this research is to investigate the process of economic news reporting
in Malaysia in order to study the practice behind the end-product. To do this, this research
will examine the role of journalists, editors, external factors and media organizations in
determining the end-product. It also tries to determine factors and elements which influence
the process of news production and describes the kind of economic communication that take
place in this country.
This research looks at the production of economic reporting, identifies the factors and
elements that influence the process in two news organizations, The New Straits Times (NST)
and Business Times (BT), which are chosen as the case study. In order to develop the
theoretical framework, both internal and external factors in news production have been
examined.
Apart from that, this study also introduces the concepts and model of economic
communication in order to create a I!ew sub-discipline in the area of economic
communication. The concepts and model presented serve as a foundation and framework for
further research on economic journalism.
The study found that the production of economic news are similar to any other news.
Although economic news reporting is a specialized area and should be treated as such. the
news organizations studied do not emphasize its speciality. Journalists are recruited without
considering their background. Thus, due to lack in economic knowledge, professionalism in
economic reporting is very low. Consequently, economic reporting suffers lack-of-depth, has
no agenda for the readers but merely react to events, not analytical enough and is still in the
infancy stage although it has been in the industry for a long time. As a result, the readers
receive a very shallow product although the society-is moving towards knowledge-economy.
From the critical political-economic perspective, hegemony is maintained through the
control and ownership of the studied news organizations. Editors and journalists are induced
into this hegemonic system through socialization. As a result, the economic news will thus go
through a structural process by the gatekeepers, namely the editors and owners. The
gatekeeping process of the news organizations determines the content of the news in order to
promulgates the idea of the dominant class. The s!tuation can be seen from the hierarchical
structure in the organizations studied.
