Abstract
Website is a powerful tool for businesses in today’s world. Despite of the publicised
advantages, the scarcity of information about website utilisation among architectural
firms and quantity surveying firms in Malaysia indicates that this issue gets little
attention from the scholars in the field. This thesis is to distinguish between website
adopters and non-adopters in terms of their firms’ profile, the influence of firm age,
firm size, source of project, and involvement with overseas project towards the
adoption of website and the impact of website on firms’ average commission. Apart
from that, the purposes of developing a website, the realised benefits of website
adoption and the inhibitions factors that influenced the non-adopters from developing
a website for their firms are explored. 639 sets of questionnaires were distributed by
postal to all 319 quantity surveying firms and 320 randomly selected architectural
firms nationwide. In effort to get higher response rate, invitations to answer the
survey online via KwikSurvey.com service were sent to respondents’ e-mail. 94
firms responded to the survey, resulting in 14.7% of response rate. Then, 11
interviews were conducted either by telephone, chatting on-line or face-to-face
interviews, to complement the survey in qualitative ways. Nonparametric tests
namely Mann-Whitney U tests, Chi-Square test, Spearman’s Rank-Order correlation
and descriptive analysis were used to analyse the quantitative data, while the
interviews were transcribed to extract the gist of it.
