dc.description.abstractThe Muslim Ummah believe in the al}.adieth as the most authoritative source of reference and guidance for conduct in lif~. after the Quran. It is in fact an obligation on the part of the individual Muslim to practise the injunctions laid down by the various r al}.adieth as well as to propagate its teachings to other people. This obligation will be consummated only when the Muslim is mindful of the distinction between the authentic a:Qad'ieth, categorized as ~Q.Il;l and hasan, and its antithesis, namely the unreliable hadith or 9a'ifin the sense that he must be careful to eschew the 9a'ifhadith when it comes to being a source of guidance for practical implementation.· With thousands of ahadeeth in the corpus of Islamic texts, not surprisingly there will be some defects regarding the authenticity of some of the a.Q.adieth. The amalgamation of the ·:?a.Q.IQ., hasan and da'if a.Q.adieth has prompted the scholars of l;ladith to classify the al}.adleth according to its appropriate degree of reliability and authenticity. Nevertheless, there are some Qa'if a];lad'ieth which invariably escaped such close scrutiny. There were also some differences of opinion amongst the scholars' which led to different criteria which were. used to classify the a];ladieth. In the Sabll al-Muhtad'in, the admission of some al)adieth of dubious authenticity for reference has created negative elements regarding the kitab. The existence of these a];ladieth has invited criticism and polemics in terms of deeper understanding of the kitab. It is feared that those who understood the subject of al)adieth would harbour doubts upon people who had no qualms quoting unreliable al)adleth. This could give rise to" anti-Q.adith syndrome" which was rife at some point - in Islamic history. Therefore, one of the ways to refine, purify and elevate the status of many such traditional kitab which depended on extensive usage of the al}.adieth is by reexamining the authenticity of the al;tadieth or what is known as the process of ta~qlq.en_US
