Abstract
Drains and trenches filled 'Hith polluted water are the
major breeding habitats for Culex quinquefasciatus in the
Bandar Bayan Baru residential area. The i mma t: ur e stages
were found to be present among AxorwpLlS .-:.;p and Imper ita sp
grasses as well as garbage found along the drainage system~
The number of larvae varied consider ably and showed no
correlation (p>0.05) to rainfall, t~mperature, pH,
conductivity, dissolve oxygen and biochemical oxygen demand
whereas in the trenches, only the conductivity value
correlated (p<0.05) with the number o£ larvae per dipper.
However, t test showed that there was no significant
difference (p>0.05) between the number of larvae per dipper
at both sites throughout this study period.
Sampling of adt-~:.t mosquitoE:s v;as carried out: using CDC
light trap baitec1 1.vith d.ry ice, chicker: baited trap,
resting bo~·:es and r.'he bare leg catch t·echnique (BLC).
Approximately 2,701 Cx. quinquefasciatus adults were
successfully collected using these four techniques. From
this approximate total, 3.4% (93). were collected using the
CDC light trap baited with dry ice, 4.0\. ('108) using the
chicken baited trap, 7.8'3.; (212) from r·esting boxes and
84.7% (2,288) using the BLC technique. An ANOVA test showed .
at least one mean was significantly different (p<0.05). A
xii
Duncan multiple range test showed that the BLC technique
was the only technique that showed an obvious difference
compared to the other traps tested. It was also found that
there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the total
numbers of mosquitoes present at night during this study
period. The BLC technique was used to study the biting
patterns of ex. quinquefasciatus in Sungai Nibong Kecil
village, Penang. During the sampling period, a total of
7, 284 mosquitoes were collected inside and outside of .two
buildings of which, 31.89% (2,323) were collected inside
the building and 68.11% (4,961) were collected outside. A
t test indicated that the difference was significant
(p<O.OS). The peak biting activity occured between 0000
hours and 0200 hours, after which i't declined. A t test
showed no significant difference (p>0.05) for the number of
mosquitoes caught before and after 0100 hours both outside
and inside the building.
Egg rafts were abundant at the end of December and
February, early March, middle of May, end of July and
throughout September.
The number, of adult mosquitoes were found to increase
during the second week of September, second week of
November, early December, end of January, end of February,
early March, early April, end of July, early August, the
third week of August and in early September. The nurr1ber of
egg rafts showed a positive correlation with the number of
adult mosquitoes (p<0.05).
On the other hand, rainfall, temperature and relative
humidity showed no correlation (p>0.05) with the number of
egg rafts and adult mosquitoes.
