Solar energy is one of the most successful method to reduce the world from excessive emission of global greenhouse gasses (GHGs). Photovoltaic systems known as an environmentally friendly, clean and secure energy sources of the renewable energy. The solar energy generation will involve the application of photovoltaic (PV) system. Therefore, this fact makes the solar energy resources attractive for many applications, especially for the rural and remote areas of most of the developing location. This project objective is to design a PV system that connected to the power grid which is able to support 10% of total load demand of Penang Island. The 10% load supported by the system is approximately 27.273 GWh/day with 1.136 GW power consumption daily. Solar irradiation and dry bulb temperature play an important role in designing appropriate photovoltaic (PV) system. Both data for solar irradiation and dry bulb temperature for the year 2013 to 2015 was acquired from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD). From the data collected and analyzed, the optimum average daily solar irradiation is 4.88 kWh/m2. The design involves of the calculation of the capacity of the PV module and solar inverter. As a result, 24,048 units of SPR-327NE-WHT-D module PV and 19,694 units of PVI 100KW inverter has been selected. The selection of the type of the component is based on the calculation of the design system. In future, major specific research and studies should be done in designing PV system. This can help to improve the performance of PV system in terms of rating and the efficiency of the components.en_US
