Abstract
This study examined the cognitive and motivational effects oftwo modes of multimedia presentation, namely multiple-channel presentation (MCP) and single-channel presentation (SCP) on students of different learning approaches. The multimedia courseware was systematically designed and developed by the researcher using Macromedia Authorware Attain 5 as the authoring tool. A 2 x 2 quasi-experimental design was used in this study. The independent variables were the two modes of multimedia presentation (MCP and SCP). The moderator variables were the learning approaches ofthe students. The dependent variables were the learning gain of the learners and the motivational effects of the two presentation modes. The samples consisted of240 F9rm One students from four Malaysian schools. Findings. of this study showed that students who received the MCP mode obtained significantly higher gain score compared to students who received the SCP mode. Deep approaches students obtained higher gain score compared to students with surface approaches in both presentation modes. No significant interaction effects of learning gain were found between the presentation modes and the learning approaches of the students. Findings ofthis study also showed that students who received the MCP mode obtained significantly higher motivational score compared to students whoreceived the SCP mode. Deep approaches students obtained significantly higher motivational score compared to students with surface approaches in both presentation modes. There were significant interaction effects of motivational scores between the presentation mode and the learning approaches ofthe students. The results of this study were supportive ofthe positive value ofthe MCP effect in history learning. Implications ofthis study indicated that appropriate use of multimediabased history learning with adequate channel (media attributes) has the potential for significantly improving the cognitive and motivational achievement of the students.
