dc.description.abstractThe development of bio-composites cured by ultra violet radiation is reported in this research. Composites were produced by using empty fruit bunch (EFB) as fiber reinforcement/filler and unsaturated polyester resin as the matrix. The pulping process employed was organosolv pulping in which the EFB was treated with different concentration of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The EFB pulp was chemically modified with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to different percentage of WPG and the composites were made with different percentage of fiber loading. Results showed that the Kappa number decreased with the increase of % NaOH in organosolv pulping. Composites which were made from modified EFB with GMA showed better mechanical properties (tensile, flexural and impact strength) and physical properties (absorption and thickness swelling) than those of untreated fibers. Thermal analysis showed higher endothermic peak for treated EFB and FTIR spectroscopy results showed band that proved the grafting reaction between GMA and OH from EFB fiber. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed the evidence of the enhancement of the compatibility between EFB-matrix. Overall, mechanical and physical properties decreased with the increase of % of fiber loading. It was believed that there were 2 factors affecting mechanical properties of the composites in this study; (a) reduction of UV radiation (caused by the presence of lignin in the fibres) (b) enhancement of compatibility between fiber-matrix of the modified fibers with GMA.en_US
