The dissertation topic was mooted with the intention to exist a safer work place in the construction industry. The research involves identifying the main root causes for the const~_ction accidents. Thereby, also aim to establish an effective Occupational, Safety & Health Management System (OSHMS) for mitigating the accident rate. Existing literatures and documentations from published journals, books, professional reports, intemets and prominent speakers on the topic discussed were reviewed. References have been made to case studies and court cases pertaining to construction accidents within our country and from the abroad as well. Short questionnaire survey was developed and distributed among construction practitioners in both the upper and lower management groups. Face to face interviews with targeted respondents and a practical site assessment were also conducted. Generally, the research was examined from both the qualitative and the quantitative perspectives. The research findings show that negligence and ignorance of project participants towards the OSH provisions, and ineffective OSH enforcement are the main root causes for the construction accidents. The accident rate can be mitigated through the establishment of an effective OSHMS. KEYWORDS :Negligence, Ignorance, OSH Enforcement, OSHMS.en_US
