Abstract
This study investigated the physical, morphological properties and chemical compositions of parenchyma and vascular bundle of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) trunks. The sample of oil palm trunk were divided into 3 parts which are outer, middle and inner parts and stored in a room at a temperature of 29°C. This sample also was kept for 0, 45, and 60 days prior to any tests. Each part was separated manually to obtain a parenchyma and vascular bundles cells from oil palm trunk for physical properties, morphological properties and chemical composition analysis. Physical properties including moisture content, percentage of ratio, density and color measurement were determined to know their properties of separated samples. The different ratio of parenchyma and vascular bundle in each zone also may affect the moisture content and density in oil palm trunks. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to determine the morphological properties of parenchyma and vascular bundle in oil palm trunk. From the TEM acquired parenchyma found to have thinner primary wall compared to the vascular bundle. Tertiary wall does not exist in parenchyma and vascular bundle of oil palm trunk but S2 wall formed the majority of cell wall in parenchyma compared vascular bundle. In chemical compositions parenchyma showed higher extractive content compared to the vascular bundle during the storage time and parenchyma on the top parts showed slightly higher compared to the parenchyma bottom.
