Abstract
This is a survey research on Teacher’s Conceptions and Assessment Practices (TCoAP) involving 396 sample of teachers from 127 schools in Perak. The focus of the study was to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of TCoAP instrument through the development of the TCoAP model. The study also investigated the relationship between teachers’ conceptions and assessment practices. The TCoAP instrument consists of two scales of measurement: Teachers’ Conceptions of Assessment (TCoA) and Teachers’ Practices of Assessment (TPrA) which was analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) techniques using SPSS Version 15.0 and AMOS Version 18.0 to verify the dimensions of both constructs. The constructs were then analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to determine the causal relationship between them. The results showed that the TCoA model consists of four dimensions with 16 items, while the TPrA model consists of 11 dimensions which cover knowledge and skills aspects with 48 items. The reliability value of all items in the constructs are high (Cronbach's α between 0.71-0.89) and achieved good convergent and discriminant validity to form the TCoAP Model. Results of SEM analysis on the TCoAP model showed that the Positive TCoA dimensions contribute 26% to TPrA in schools. Results of the study showed that TCoA model are multidimensional and contributes to the literature showing TCoA are different according to the belief and assessment system held. The implications of the study is that the MoE should review the Teachers’ Conceptions of Assessment in terms of the purpose of assessment for student learning, as it may influenced their practices.
