Abstract
Talent Management is more than initiatives on developing the leaders for tomorrow. It is the combined proposal for recruitment, retainment and developing local members in an organization for its upcoming value. It also includes strategic planning, culture and change management. Although many scholars have written on what, why, how, when and steps to talent management, the value that it provides to an organisation is far more complex than that and is very much under researched critically. This research discusses the value of Talent Management today, in building strengths through people development for competitive advantage. Though most organisations have a clear scope about the need for building people to carry out succession planning, they are not always aware of its unintended consequences and impacts, both on employees themselves and top management as a whole. For example, an unintended consequence of the implementation of a talent development process can easily impact the morale growth of the non-selected pool of employees in an organisation. Another example would be that the selection for the screening in a talent management programme could be condemned by non-performers and thus impacts the collective employees’ trust or perception on management itself. Pulling these two in parallel, the talent management initiative may not necessarily add value to gain competitiveness. This research paper will study the effectiveness of Talent Management initiatives in multinationals within Malaysia, and to provide a theoretical framework that would help scholars and practitioners to frame and engage some of the issues faced with regard to Talent Management.
