Abstract
Malay architecture is now being studied intensively and analyzed in various aspects. Focus is being given on the aspects of interior in order to understand the characteristics of its architecture from the interior stand point that has not been studied whereas interior design has long been established in Malaysia since 1976. The observation on Malay interior of Rumah Bumbung Me/ayu Perak (RBMP) is an effort towards understanding the characteristics of the interior space through the view of its simple interior characters. This study is an attempt to analyse the fixed interior elements consists of physical components such as floor, wall and roof. Before a precise observation is done on the interiors of RBMP, basic elements of Northern, Southern and East Coast interior styles are identified to understand the basic similarities and differences in term of the component forms of the interior space. It is discovered that there are similarities and differences between the two styles, for instance, the interior components of both styles. Besides the mentioned, there are differences between the arrangement of the space, orientation and the complexity of the carvings. Next, the choice of West Coast Style or Perak Style as a case study is based on the relationship between the history of Melaka and Perak royal lineages. Besides, the choice is also a step to look at the West Coast Style especially the Perak Style that is categorized· as minimal interior space that stresses mainly on functional interior resulted from the era of test. The framework of thought for Malays around the Straits of Melaka is taken as the point of reference to understand the basic Perak Malay interior. The study is narrowed down to Malay houses of Bumbung Me/ayu type or Perabung Panjang type by identifying the form and type of interiors based on the wall material treatments that can portray the character of the interiors. 32 houses has been listed for the study, through visual observation method, there are various criteria used to choose the house for the case study. There are eight (8) houses chosen as the case study to represent the volumes of houses. They are identified based on the observation on the various components of interior spaces. The study reveals that there are 15 types of Perak Style interiors. Perak style is wellknown for its limited wall opening, no 'anjung', there is a 'serambi' in the main section of the house and generally it has simple carving which is its own exclusive style that others do not have, and that warrants investigation. The interior design and style focuses the main section of the house as a space for social and domestic needs. Specific characteristics are one of the basic matters raised that differences between other styles that are being stressed in the case study. The mentioned specific characteristics that differentiate the styles are understood through the observations on the component in the interiors with the help of interviews with the senior citizen community in Perak who retold the real situation that linked to the physical surrounding and safety of Perak. This study too is to put forth the visible characteristics or physical interior space of Malay Perak as the basis for Malay interior design. The visible characteristics of interior design will be a basic principle in the effort of understanding and practicing the elements in Perak Malay style in education and career. ·
