Abstract
A series of experiments were conducted to determine
the role of ascorbic acid in opposing various stresses in
white rats (Rattus rattus). The effect of ascorbic acid
supplementation (100 mg AA/100 ml distilled water) in stressed
animals were also observed. Among the various stresses used
were :
(i) Food Starvation,
0
(ii) Heat (33 C), and
(iii) Disease (Infection with Trypanosoma evansi).
The tissues examined were l
(i) Liver,
(ii) The adrenals, and
(iii) Blood plasma.
The concentration of ascorbic acid in all the tissues examined
showed certain changes in response to the stresses imposed
upon the animals. In general, the concentration of ascorbic
acid in the liver, adrenal and blood plasma were found to
decrease in animals under stress but unsupplemented with ascorbic
acid in all the experiments conducted. On the other hand, the
ascorbic acid concentration in these tissues were found to
elevate in animals exposed to all the stresses and supplemented
with ascorbic acid. The present study indicates that under the
stresses examined there is a depletion of ascorbic acid in the
tissues examined and the animals may require supplementary
ascorbic acid under these conditions.
