Abstract
Coastal development on the east coast of Penang, Malaysia has replaced natural shorelines with built shoreline protection, adversely affecting marine organisms living on these “new” shores. Unlike natural habitats, artificial habitats do not have cracks and crevices, but do have an abundance of ecosystem engineers. Ecosystem engineers, such as oysters and barnacles, provide structural complexity for other individuals to make use of. The aim of this research is to study the diversity of macrobenthos and relationship of structural complexity to these organisms. The study was done on the rocky shores of Penang Island.
