Abstract
This research analyses the politics of ethnicity in Sabah United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) from 1991 up to 2012. The research is a qualitative research whereby data was obtained through interviews with 28 respondents comprising politicians, civil servants and the general public from various educational and economic backgrounds. The objective of this research is to determine the role of Sabah UMNO in unifying the different ethnic groups in Sabah, to evaluate the multi-racial composition and the role of non-Muslim bumiputeras in Sabah UMNO and to analyze the role played by Sabah UMNO in the economic, social and political development of Sabah since 1991 and up to 2012. The research shows that Sabah UMNO has been successful in uniting the bumiputeras in the party and in bringing about unity and understanding amongst the component parties in Barisan Nasional (BN) as well. The role of Sabah UMNO as a unifier of the bumiputeras in Sabah has eroded the influence of ethnic cultural associations and reduced anti-Federal sentiments in Sabah. Sabah UMNO has also been successful in attracting non-Muslim bumiputeras into its fold even though the essence of the struggle and aim of the party in the Peninsula was for the Malays and for Islam. This research further shows that Sabah UMNO as the backbone of the BN government in Sabah has been able to bring about economic, social and political development to the State.
