dc.description.abstractMost of the tests used by school teachers are not developed through proper measurement procedures. Test results might yield informations that have low validity and may lead to misinterpretation of students' ability. Test results also lack information with regards to the skills that have been achieved and the skills yet to be learned by individual students to help teachers in improving the teaching and learning in the classrooms. This study is aimed to develop and validate a test for Year Four Primary Mathematics. This study also looked into teachers' opinion on the use of test results to improve the teaching and learning in the classrooms. Test items were developed according to a test specification table. The test consists of two papers ; Paper I and Paper II. There are 40 multiple choice items for Paper I and 20 constructed response items for Paper II. Test was administered to year four pupils in eight primary schools. The number of students involved was 611. Fifteen Mathematics teachers were interviewed regarding the use of test results. Data from the test was analysed using Rasch measurement analysis computer program, the BIGSTEP version 2.82. Responses from 599 (N=599) pupils for Paper I and 513 (N=513) pupils for Paper II were analysed. Bias items were also considered during the validation. Interview data was analysed manually. The test was validated through three stages; by the researcher's own ideas, by the experts and by the respondents (the students who took the test). Year four primary school Mathematics test has been found to be less valid due to low quality items in the test. Two items have been suspected to be sex bias. The 'Point Biserial' for most of the items were also quite low. Interview with teachers shows that test results are mainly used for remedial rather than reinforcement or enrichment.en_US
