- PublicationProduction, characterization, and properties of sand coated epoxy filled vinyl ester(2009-05-01)Abdul Muis, NorhaidaThe physical and mechanical properties of sand coated epoxy applied in vinyl ester composites were studied in this project. Tensile properties are the mechanical property that is being studied. It was observed, the modification of sand filler particle with epoxy resin has improved the mechanical strength but only at certain filler loading and the sand incorporated. The size of pure sand is 106 µm after grinding process using grinding mill. The sand need to be grind first in order to get the smaller in size as can to be filler. After modification, the size has been doubled until 212 µm. The smaller the size of filler, the better is the properties of composite. The parameter used in the production of sand coated epoxy is the amount of sand inside to be coated in the filler compound. The different amount of sand in the filler compound, ES30, ES40, ES50, and ES60 has given an effect on the properties of composite material. The stirring speed, curing time, and curing temperature are constant. The properties of sand without coated compared to the sand coated with epoxy resin are studied. The morphology of coated particles inside the filler compound is studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) technique. The density of coated filler increased as the amount of sand increased. Amount of sand inside filler compound, size of coated particles, and amount of sand coated with epoxy affected the properties of composite. Void content in the composite has also studied. The amount of void did not significantly affect the mechanical properties. The composite (ES50) at 5% filler loading shows the best performance which shows the highest tensile strength with low tensile modulus.
