- PublicationStudy on the prospect of marine energy in malaysia(2009-04-01)Ab Wahab, Mohd AmirulhaizadThis research is about studying the prospect of renewable energy in Malaysia. The research is based on the energy in the activity of wave and the sea temperature. Two main aspects of studies here is the Pelamis wave energy converter and also the ocean thermal energy converter. Pelamis wave energy converter applied the hydraulic system concept in common machinery item to operate on the sea. The ocean wave in Malaysia is around wave 1.0 – 2.0 meters with wind speed as only up to 20 – 30 km/h. Even though not as strong as other countries, but if built in farm, it can promote a sufficient energy for those lives along the sea. Capable of producing energy as minimum as . annually does make Pelamis wave energy converter is conventional and prospectus for its application in Malaysia. In the ocean thermal energy converter (OTEC), it operates by using the temperature as its parameter. The sea surface temperature (warm seawater) and its underwater temperature (cold seawater) will be the parameters need to be considered. Underwater temperature is most likely to be constant, thus making the sea surface temperature as its variable. The sea surface is continuously heated by the sun making it’s a good renewable energy. This implies that there are two enormous reservoirs providing the heat source and the heat sink required for a heat engine. A practical application is found in a system (heat engine) designed to transform the thermal energy into electricity and this is the ocean thermal energy.
