- PublicationTechniques to minimize cogging torque in permanent magnet brushless machine(2009-04-01)Abd Rashid, Ahmad AizatPermanent magnet (PM) machines are widely used in many industrial applications. As for the application of constant speed or high-precision position control, the cogging torque must be taking into account to achieve smooth running, low mechanical vibration and low acoustic noise, especially at low speed. Minimizing the cogging torque is the main concerns in this project and is a great importance in the design of a PM machines. This project includes design of the motor dimension by calculation, study of cogging torque characteristics and analyzes various cogging torque minimization technique as applied to several PM machine which is 15 slots 10 pole, 12 slots 10 pole, 18 slots 6 pole and 36 slots 6 pole PMBL DC brushless motor. There are many techniques for minimizing cogging torque that had been published and this project only take four of the methods for consideration. This four method are the most popular that has been used in the industry which is skewing stator method, optimize pole arc method, bifurcated stator teeth and magnet shaping method. Before apply these methods in the design, the study on all the methods had been done to get optimal factor which can give the most minimum cogging torque. The resultant cogging torque values are computed using a two-dimensional finite element analysis package which is Opera-2D. At the end, these four method will be compared and evaluate for their advantages and disadvantages.
