- PublicationA Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Meaning Construction Through Verbal And Non-Verbal Modes In Selected Ted Public Speeches On Climate Change(2024-05)Zhang, WennaThis study explores how various symbolic resources embodied in TED talks contribute to forming meaningful units. The purposive sampling was employed to select twenty TED talks on climate change from 2019 to 2022, examining verbal and nonverbal elements based on multimodal discourse analysis. In addition, the qualitative method and textual analysis were utilised in this study to investigate the dominant themes, meaning construction through verbal and non-verbal modes and the interplay between these two modes in selected TED talks on climate change. To achieve these research objectives, the study combines the following theoretical framework: 1) Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (2004) is utilised to discuss the verbal mode, focusing on transitivity, mode, modality, personal pronoun, and thematic structure; 2) Kress and Van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar (1996) is applied to explore nonverbal modes such as gesture, eye contact, slide, and videos; 3) Martinec and Salway’s Text-Image Relation Theory is used to analyse the interaction between the verbal mode and slides. The study’s findings examine the characteristics of verbal and nonverbal modes and elucidate how they contribute to reinforcing speakers’ messages in TED talks. Above all, TED talks on climate change prioritize solutions over highlighting the issues caused by climate change.
- PublicationA Study of Translated Matrimonial Shar'i Court Documents from Arabic into English: The Case of Palestine(2023-09)Khalaf, Camellia Najeh AbdelkarimTranslating sharia court legal documents is one of the most challenging tasks for translators due to the effort needed to convey accurate and exact meanings of legal and Islam-driven terms. In this study, the analytical descriptive method is used to analyze matrimonial documents in order to explore the problems which confront Palestinian sworn translators in sharia court documents, to identify similarities and differences between Arabic legal system and English legal system, to assess the translation procedures used by the translators in dealing with terminologies in terms of accuracy and acceptability, and to find out how the translators deal with linguistic and translational decision in translating religious expressions in legal documents of sharia court. In doing so, Searle’s speech act classifications, Venti’s model, and Vinay and Darbelnet’s model of translation are used. The findings reveal that speech act similarities and differences between the Arabic legal system and the English legal system in matrimonial Sharia court documents are mainly related to the use of modal verbs, conditional sentences, the use of active and passive voice, and the use of verb tense. It is found that equivalence, literal, borrowing and modulation are found to be more accurate and acceptable in most of the translations of matrimonial documents terminologies. It is also found that the speech acts force is affected by the translators’ mishandling of language norms and translation norms
- PublicationA Syntactic Analysis Of Arabic-english Intra-sentential Code-switching In Jordanian University Students’ Speech(2022-04)Alamaren, Eman Mohammad HusseinLanguages are not perfectly complete by themselves. Language contact is the process of contacting languages to allow speakers' connection. This contact results in some changes in languages including code-mixing phenomenon. The present study aims at investigating the syntactic patterns of Jordanian Arabic-English code-mixing in Jordanian students' speech in Yarmouk University. Firstly, the study determines the types of patterns and the syntactic aspects of code-mixing in Jordanian Arabic-English pair in Yarmouk University students' speech. Secondly, it determines the effect of the syntactic differences between Arabic and English on Arabic structure when code-mixing is performed. Thirdly, it explores the most frequently used English syntactic categories that students tend to use when performing codemixing. Finally, the study examines the occurrence of Poplack's constraints in Jordanian Arabic-English code-mixing. To this end, a research design involving both qualitative and quantitative approaches was adopted. That is, tape-recorded conversations between students in Yarmouk University were qualitatively analyzed to identify the types of patterns of code-mixing, and then the conversations were quantitatively analyzed to explore the numbers of the used English constituents. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis and frequency distribution techniques. The findings revealed that there are three types of code-mixing; each type includes a number of patterns, and these types of patterns are gradual in terms of familiarity and frequency of occurrence. Verb-Object pattern occupies the first position followed by Determiner-Noun pattern, while Preposition-Noun pattern occupies the last position.
- PublicationAn Analysis Of Commissive Speech Acts In Sulha Tribunals Among Bedouins Of Jordan(2023-07)Alidmat, Ali Odeh HammoudThis study undertakes an analysis of commissive speech acts in Arabic speeches in sampled trials in tribal structures of Sulha. Sulha, as other tribal structures, is formed with an intent of promoting social cohesion through exercising tradition based customary laws. Sulha is, therefore, meant to provide an informal legal ground for the enactment of the laws. Common during the law enactment in Sulha is the presentation of competing claims between disputants, representatives and informal leaders. Previous studies informing the current study hold that for a success in presenting claims in a legal setting, a legal language enriched with speech acts must be engaged. Some of the legal activities performed by speech acts in legal discourses is that of commitment to rules of law under which a legal system operate . The speech act that find use in the performance of such commitments is commissive speech act. The current study, therefore, sought to analyse the commissive speech acts used in Sulha tribunals under four objectives: first, to investigate how Arabic speeches are used to perform a pragmatic function of commitment during Sulha tribunals; second, to examine illocutionary acts performed by Arabic speeches in the adoption and discharge of commitment during Sulha tribunals; third, to determine perlocutionary acts resulting from commissive Arabic speeches used in Sulha tribunals and fourth, to document direct and indirect speech acts of Arabic speeches used in enactment of commitment during Sulha tribunals.
- PublicationAn Analysis Of Theta Roles Of Verbs In The Mah Meri Language(2013)Rais, Maisarah MuhammadThe Mah Meri language, one of the severely endangered languages of Malaysia is facing the threat of extinction. In order to save valuable information and heritage, this research focusses on the Theta Roles in relation to the verbs in the Mah Meri language. Using Radford's (1997 & 2009) approach in analysing Theta Roles and the verbs, this study explores the interview data ofa Mah Meri native speaker. Two main ideas which are thoroughly examined in this thesis are the Theta Roles and the structural entity of verbs and their related parts ofspeech in order to understand the sentential constructions. Thus, in the primary research question, the Theta Roles examined are the Agent, Theme, Experiencer, Benefactor, Instrument, Goal and Locative. These Theta Roles are examined in relation to the verbsfound in the data ofthe study ofthe Mah Meri language. The second research question addresses the structure of verbs found in the Mah Meri language. In order to fully understand the verb structures, the morphological entities of affixes such as prefixes and suffixes are studied. Moreover, the word order of the sentential constructions are also analysed according to actives and passives. This is done in tandem with analyzing the pronouns in relation to the placement ofverbs in a Mah Meri sentential construction. In short, this thesis aims to document the language of Mah Meri in order to preserve the language heritage ofMah Meri.

It is a logical outcome of effective corporate governance and corporate social responsibility initiatives, as they can act as signals that affect stakeholders‘ perceptions and expectations regarding the company‘s future behavior. However, stakeholders‘ interests, expectations, and perceptions may be influenced by other factors, such as national culture, which forms their beliefs about the role companies should play in society. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the influence of CSR and corporate governance on corporate reputation, while considering the interaction effect of national culture on the relationship between CSR and corporate reputation. The study examines a sample of 96 financial companies listed on the stock exchanges of four MENA countries: Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, and Kuwait, during the period from 2016 to 2020. To develop corporate reputation index, the study employs Principal Components Analysis (PCA) as a technique for multivariate analysis. Furthermore, the study applies the dynamic panel system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) to estimate the dynamic corporate reputation models. The findings of the study indicate that CSR has a significant positive impact on corporate reputation, implying that CSR improves corporate reputation
- PublicationComparison Of Syntactic And Lexical Complexities In Research Articles By Iraqi And Non-Iraqi Writers(2023-07)Al Sahlanee, Ali Yasir FahadPublication productivity is an essential metric of the performance of academics and higher learning. It is directly affecting institutions' ranking and reputation. Writing for publication is signified as high-quality writing that uses advanced complex lexical units and syntactic structures to convey complex scientific findings. Linguistic complexity investigates complexity at lexical and syntactic levels; it is perceived as a reliable indicator of writing quality, proficiency, and development. Given the issue of the low publication productivity of Iraqi writers in peer-reviewed international journals, this descriptive study was implemented to evaluate and compare the use of complex lexical items and syntactic structures in the writing of linguistics research articles (RAs) written by Iraqi, English second language (L2), and English first language (L1) writers. Using the Contrastive Rhetorical Theory underpinnings, the corpus of this study includes 150 linguistics RAs published in international journals indexed in the Scopus database, mainly 50 linguistics RAs each by Iraqi writers, English L2, and English L1 writers. This study followed Wood et al. (2001) criteria to classify English L1 and L2 writers. The texts were analysed using the Lexical Complexity Analyser (LCA) and Syntactic Complexity Analyser (SCA). The findings revealed that Iraqi writers utilised the lowest number of complex lexical items and syntactic structures in their RAs compared to the texts written by English L2 and L1 writers.
- PublicationCritical Discourse Analysis On The Representation Of The Orang Asli In The Media: A Comparative Study(2023-09)Wong, Ka ChunResearch concerning the representation of the Orang Asli in the media has generally revealed representational patterns that revolve around pejorative and stereotypical depictions. Most of the existing research has mainly examined the community’s representation in mainstream news outlets whereas studies concerning alternative news outlets have received little attention. Thus, this study focuses on examining the representation of the Orang Asli by a comparison between the country’s most frequented mainstream (The Star) and alternative (Malaysiakini) news outlets from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The news reports were examined using Fairlclough’s (1995b) Three-Dimensional Framework together with the integration of Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and van Dijk’s (1998a) Theory of Ideology. A total of 12 news reports were selected from The Star and Malaysiakini respectively and were examined according to the three levels of analysis namely the micro (lexical and transitivity structures), meso (intertextuality), and macro levels (sociocultural practices and ideology) as outlined in Fairclough’s (1995b) framework. The findings at the micro and meso level show that the Orang Asli were portrayed to be traditional, dependent, problematic, and underdeveloped by both news outlets. This study also found that the positive actions of the authorities were emphasised whereas the negative characteristics of the Orang Asli were accentuated thus resulting in the ideological polarisation of “Us versus Them”. However, the findings also revealed that Malaysiakini did represent the voices of the Orang Asli more frequently as compared to The Star.

The sample consisted of 183 Form Two students from a secondary school in the Northern region of the Peninsular Malaysia. The data were collected with the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Short Form (TEIQue-SF), End-User Computing Satisfaction (EUSC), Post-Test 1, Retention Questionnaire (Post-Test 2) and E-Learning Engagement Instrument (ELEI). The research design for this study is Quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design.
- PublicationDevelopment Of A Formative Assessment Regime For Chinese-english Interpreter Training And Its Effects On Academic Achievement, Motivation, And Collaboration(2024-11)Yan,DaIn China’s interpreter training programs, efforts to systematically develop and enact a formative assessment regime has been rarely documented in the extant body of scholarship. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the applicability and impact of formative assessment regime, the present study adopted a multi-phase approach to explore the development, implementation, and learned lessons of a formative assessment regime in an interpreter training program at Xinyang Agriculture and Forestry University, a focal and representative institution of higher education in China. The researcher recruited 129 second-year interpreter learners, 7 lecturers, and 10 experts as participants in the study. Methodologically, an embedded experimental design was adhered to in the study to comprehensively include the pre-intervention, intervention, and post-intervention phases within a unified research framework. For the pre-, and post-intervention phases, the research used in-depth interview and focus group discussions to obtain viewpoints and understandings of trainees and trainers, and Delphi method for evaluative judgement of the experts. For the intervention phase, mixed-method quasi experimental approach was chosen to examine the effects of the developed formative assessment regime on the academic achievement, motivation, and collaboration in interpreter training, which were measured through a summative interpreting achievement test (SIAT), an interpreter learning motivation questionnaire (ILMQ), and naturalistic observation of classroom conversations respectively.

Three English translations of the Qur’an are selected to be studied. The data of this study are collected from Al-Baqarah Surah and its selected translations. Three main objectives have been proposed in this study. Firstly, to identify the more frequent strategy used by the translators to translate cultural terms. Secondly, to determine how the translators domesticated and foreignized cultural terms. Finally, to know which strategy of domestication and foreignization conveyed the meaning more adequately. The significance of this study arises from the fact that such studies may be used as a reference and a source for translators who are dealing with Qur’anic texts.

Compared with English listening, speaking and reading skills, the process of English writing has more complex psychological, linguistic and cultural mechanisms, thus English teaching has always been a problem for English teachers in senior high schools in China. With the reform of National English Curriculum Standards (2017 Edition) and National College Matriculation Examination, there are problems in teaching English writing, such as quick memorization of model texts for exams, over-reliance on traditional writing methods, or students' lack of interest in English writing. The research applies "L2W, R2L" pedagogy to find out the over-reliance on traditional English writing methods’ limitations and enhance students' interest in English writing, which has become an important research issue in English writing teaching.The purpose of the research is to introduce the application of "L2W, R2L" pedagogy to the narrative genre of English writing for senior high school students of Grade Two in China.
- PublicationEnglish Language Target Needs Of Medical Students At Ibb University In Yemen(2023-07)Hussein Farea, Wafa Ahmed AliDriven by the understanding that learners’ needs should be considered for an effective English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course, this study aimed to investigate the English language target needs for the development of the existing ESP course at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at Ibb University (IU) in Yemen. The needs analysis (NA) is a vital asset in designing and developing suitable ESP curriculum to meet the academic and professional requirements of the students. The conceptual framework of the present study is based on structuration theory and constructivism theory, along with Hutchinson and Waters’ (1987) framework utilised as a tool to identify the learners’ necessities, lacks and wants. A triangulation research method was followed in the present study. Thus, two different instruments, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach was adopted for the English language target needs analysis. The maximum variation purposive sampling strategy, the most common purposive sampling strategy, is employed in the current study to select a representative sampling of the stakeholders and to give much insight into needs analysis from different perspectives.
- PublicationEnglish Translations Of Quranic Verses Regarding Women: An In-Depth Analysis Of Loss And Gain In Meaning Based On Baker’S Taxonomy(2022-09)Omar Ba Sharahil, Fatma Ahmed AbdallahStudies have demonstrated that no translation of the Holy Quran is devoid of shortcomings; the point of interest is not whether there are shortcomings, but lies instead in the extent of the shortcomings, since translating the Holy Quran into a foreign language with perfect accuracy is an impossible task. Referring to several Quranic verses, claims have been made that Islam oppresses women and deprives them of their rights. This general perception that women are looked down upon, discriminated and insulted based on verses of the Holy Quran is common in the West, where translations of the Holy Quran are relied on. This thesis comprises an in-depth analysis of four English renditions of Quranic verses regarding women from the renditions by Pickthall, Arberry, Sarwar and Abdel Haleem. The selected verses are analysed with the aim of identifying the strategies used and determining the extent of loss or gain in meaning. Also, identification of the most dominant and least used strategies, and determining the themes demonstrating the most loss or gain in meaning. To this end, the verses regarding women were identified and categorised into five major themes based on their subject matter, then analysed using Baker’s taxonomy.
- PublicationEnglish-arabic Translations Of Selected Business And Economic Texts: A Discourse Analysis(2023-06)Talafha, Dua'a Khalifah MohammadThis study is a descriptive study which aims at describing the relation between macrostructures and microstructures in English business and economic texts and their translations in Arabic. It also aims to find the similarities and differences of English and Arabic macrostructures and microstructures in business and economic language. It links four linguistic devices including tenses, voices, modality and cohesion to their situational features represented in the Hallydian model (1979). It follows a descriptive qualitative method where Van Dijk's (1977) conceptions of macrostructures and microstructures were used as the parameters. The sample was taken from two websites; namely World Bank blogs and Finance and Development Magazine where 20 online texts were selected from each website along with their translations in Arabic. The findings show that the semantic function of tenses and modalities are affected by the translation choices and the Arabic language norms which in turn affect the ideational (field) and interpersonal functions (tenor) of the Arabic texts. Voices and cohesion show no significant effect as translators translated them according to language norms in Arabic. The study substantiates the importance of linking linguistic devices to their situational features and how the meanings are affecting the latter. The study recommends researchers to adapt this approach to other linguistic devices that prove to be lacking in this genre such as mood and structures.

- PublicationLexical And Syntactic Problems In The English- Arabic Translations Of Legal Texts On Migrants And Refugees(2024-07)Rahabneh, Amani Mohammad NayefThe present study investigated lexical and syntactic problems in the English Arabic translations of legal texts on migrants and refugees. In order to analyze these problems, it was compulsory to investigate lexical and syntactic features of legal texts. To analyze these features, three models of translation were adopted: Nord's Model of text analysis (2005), Vinay and Darbelnet (2000), and Catford’s theory of shifts (1965). The application of the Skopos theory facilitated the selection of appropriate translation strategies to convey meaning effectively in the target language by analyzing the extratextual and intratextual factors of the texts. Vinay and Darbelnet’s model provided insights into strategies employed during the translation process, while Catford’s theory shed light on structural differences between English and Arabic. Through a descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis, the study identified lexical and syntactic gaps between English and Arabic legal texts, prompting translators to utilize strategies such as direct translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, as well as structure shifts, unit shifts, and level shifts. The findings underscored the significant challenges posed by lexical and syntactic features in legal translation. Lexically, there were gaps between the languages, requiring careful consideration of legal terminology and concepts. For example, technical terms are prominently featured. Performative verbs lost a part of their meaning which is obligation or permission.
- PublicationNigerians’ Attitudes Towards The Imitation Of Received Pronunciation Accent In Nigerians’ News Reading(2023-09)Hussaini, Wakkai HosannaUsing explanatory sequential design of mixed-methods, this research investigated Nigerians’ attitudes towards the imitation of Received Pronunciation accent in Nigerians’ news reading. There have been scarce field-based studies conducted on Nigerians’ attitudes towards English in Nigeria. The few studies conducted on the field only looked at Nigerians’ attitudes towards Received Pronunciation without focusing on the Nigerians’ attitudes towards the imitation of Received Pronunciation accent in Nigerians’ news reading. Therefore, the Nigerians’ attitudes towards the imitation of Received Pronunciation accent in Nigerians’ news reading formed the object of this study, with the objective of evaluating both the inter-speaker and intra-speaker attitudes of Nigerians towards it. The questionnaire participants were 236, selected from the class of Nigerian public university lecturers. While the interview participants were 24, 14 drawn from the questionnaire participants and 10 from the Nigerian newsreaders on television. The study was conducted within the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of sociolinguistics and language attitude respectively. From the quantitative data, results showed that participants liked and preferred listening to the imitation of Received Pronunciation by Nigerians in news reading over other English accents used in news reading. Yet, for the sake of their identities, the participants disagreed that they imitate the Nigerian newsreaders’ accent.
