Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that becomes a burden on global health. The warning sign of diabetes include polyuria, polydipsia, unexplained weight
loss and blurry vision. Uncontrolled diabetes leads to long-term complication including
diabetic nephropathy and hypertension. Modem oral hypoglycemia drugs are costly and
have side effects. Thus, people are seeking for herb-sources complementary therapies
which are cost-effective. The flower of Etlingera elatior or ‘Bunga Kantan’ has been
used traditionally to lower blood sugar in diabetic sufferer. In this study, bunga kantan
aqueous extract (BKAE) was evaluated for its anti-diabetic effect on diabetic rats model. Diabetes was induced into Sprague-Dawley rats by single doses of intraperitoneal STZ (60mg/kg). Twenty-four (24) rats equally were divided into 4
groups. Group 1; normal group, Group 2; untreated diabetic group, Group 3; 300mg/kg
BKAE treated-group and Group 4; 250mg/kg metformin treated-group. The effects of
BKAE on blood glucose level, body weight, kidney function and blood pressure were
evaluated for 6 weeks treatment (sub-acute in vivo study). Blood glucose level and body
weight were measured weekly, while blood pressure only measured at the end of study.
Histology study of kidney (hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E)), phytochemical
screening and toxicity study of BKAE also investigate in this study. Six-weeks
treatment of oral BKAE significantly reduced blood glucose level in diabetic rat,
comparable to metformin. Body weight of BKAE treated-rat also increased. BKAE
significantly reduced blood pressure and improved the kidney function. Histology
BKAE-treated kidney resembles normal kidney comparable to metformin. Flavonoids,
tannins, quinines, terpenoids and coumarin were the chemical constituents screened in
BKAE. Lethal dose for BKAE was aboved 5000 mg/kg of BKAE. Overall, this study has shown that bunga kantan has hypoglycaemic effect and improved the secondary
complications from diabetes.
