Abstract
Construction industry in Malaysia today is developing very rapid .We are moving towards a developed country in the twenty first century. In spite of the vast concrete usage where new projects are being implemented, there are still a lot of weaknesses such as the failure or deterioration of a concrete structure. Whenever a concrete structure fails to perform, a big amount of money has to be spent in order to replace or to rectify it. Tenaga Nasional Berhad ( TNB ) as one of the biggest power producer in Malaysia, having all the links of hydro electric power plants is also facing the same problems for their concrete structure. Through this case study on the defects and cracking of concrete at the Chenderoh Hydro Electric Power Station, the most common factors for concrete failure at service such as weakness during construction, chemical attacks, carbonation, geology and geographical factors or even the raw materials used will be known. Cracks width are being monitored every month for a certain period. From the data collected, studies has been carried out and found that the cracking of the concrete structures are mainly due to drying shrinkage or thermal cracking and needs rehabilitation in order to prolong its service with ease and safe.
