Abstract
Short circuits and other abnormal conditions often occur on a power system. It occurs due to the failure of the insulation between a phase conductor and the earth, or due to a phase conductor breaking and falling to the ground. The heavy current associated with short circuit is likely to cause damage to equipment if suitable protection system is not provided. Therefore, in this case an over current protection plays an important role to avoid the power system from malfunction. The same concept of the over current protection will be used in an experiment to determine a level of partial discharge for palm’s oil as liquid insulator in high voltage laboratory. In this project, the main objective is to ensure the safety of the lab’s operator during conducting an experiment and also to protect the equipments in laboratory from damage due to fault especially short circuit. Before design the circuit, all requirements needed in the system are considered. Then, the operation of the system is showed graphically by using PSCAD before the hardware is implemented. Finally, the commissioning of the protection system is done solely and the factors which may affect the ability of the system are discussed.
