Abstract
A procedure to enhance the quality of the finger vein image has been found. This procedure implies the change of the light intensity of infrared (IR) source to overcome the unclear veins
problem. This thesis deals with a new approach for detection of finger veins. A technique to build a low-cost device that can capture the vein image is introduced with the improvement of
microcontroller to adjust the light intensity. The device had been developed based on IR imaging concept. It composed of three important parts where an IR light emitting diode (LED) act as
a source to lights the finger and a web camera as the sensor to capture the vein image. As an improvement, microcontroller is interfaced to IR LED to control the intensity of light. IR LED emits
the IR light from the back of a finger then hemoglobin in the blood absorbs IR light. Therefore, as the blood is inside the vein, it will form a dark vein pattern with a bright background captured
by the web camera. The purpose of the microcontroller is to change the IR light intensity at certain part of finger so that clearer image can be captured. Yet, different people need different
adjustment of intensity of IR LED to get clearer image. The experimental result of the developed device can be used for verifying individuals.
