Abstract
This final year project, which is entitled “Analysis and Design of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) by Using Soft Switching Technique for the Application of Active Power Filter”, is intended for analyzing and designing of PWM circuit by using the soft switching technique for the use of power device switching in active power filter. This switching technique can be used for power device switching in performing the process of turn-on and turn-off on a fixed time, whether at zero current or at zero voltage. Hence, power device switching can be performed without any constraint or all of a sudden. This is the product of zero current switching and zero voltage switching, which causes current to be in the same phase with the source voltage. PWM technique that has been chosen is sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). Soft switching technique has been implemented in order to overcome problems on energy losses of power devices during high-frequency switching and on reducing the electromagnetic interference (EMI). Power device that has been used as components in the inverter circuit is insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). In order to achieve this project objective, literature reviews have been done on PWM techniques, on soft switching techniques, and on inverter that used IGBT. Then, inverter circuit with PWM soft switching is designed by using SIMCAD V4.1 and PSPICE V9.2. The software simulation for the circuit is compared with theory to verify the circuit. Prototype has been developed after confirming the software simulation results. From the final results, it is found that PWM switching with the soft switching technique can be used to reduce losses and subsequently, to decrease the distortion and harmonic at the output.
