Abstract
The purpose of this project is to design a drive circuit for two quadrant operation of dc motor. A two quadrant operation means that the output voltage is either positive or negative in polarity and the output current is in positive polarity. Thus, to produce such outputs, the single-phase full wave controlled rectifier is use which consists of a switching circuit and a single-phase controlled rectifier with four thyristors. The voltage supply is an alternating (AC) voltage with 50 Hz line and then it is converted into a direct-current (DC) output voltage by using single-phase controlled rectifier. Single-phase controlled rectifier is consists of four thyristors in bridge connection and the thyristor is use because of its ability to produce a controllable output voltage by varying the firing angle on gate terminal. To trigger the firing angle of the thyristor, a switching circuit is needed. These switching circuits produces a pulse and is apply to the gate terminal to turn-on the thyristors into the conducting state, or otherwise it is in open circuit. The characteristic of dc motor itself which can operate in forward and reverse direction does make it suitable for the singlephase controlled rectifier application.
