Abstract
Toll plazas play important role in generating revenues to the expressway agencies. Large portion of the revenues is collected for the operation and maintenance of the expressway. Malaysia’s toll plaza consists of three types of toll booth which are cash payment, Touch ‘n Go and Smart Tag toll booth. Expressway user must passing through the toll plaza before it is allowed to travel on it. However, toll plaza had introduced additional delay time on expressway user’s travel time. During peak hour of a normal weekday, vehicles queue can be noticed in front of toll plaza especially on cash payment toll booth. This situation happened for both entry and exit of toll plaza. When traffic volume exceeding toll plaza capacity, vehicles queue begun to extend to few kilometres away from toll plaza into the expressway. Eventually, vehicles queue disturbed the flow of vehicles on expressway. Hence, investigation of delay time of vehicles is carried out to determine the average delay time and factors that affect the delay time at exit of toll plaza. From the investigation, queuing time and processing time is obtained from the video recording play back that setup nearby exit of toll plaza. Total delay time is obtained from the summation of queuing time and processing time of vehicles at toll plaza. From the field data, mean value, standard deviation, and highest frequency of delay time of vehicles is obtained. Besides that, prediction and improvement of the delay time on vehicles at various kind of situation can be made through the finding.
