Abstract
Sea cucumbers of the genus stichopus (locally known as gamat) hold significant economic and cultural value in malaysia, particularly for their use in traditional medicine and health products. Rising market demand has intensified harvesting pressure, leading to resource depletion and concerns about long-term sustainability. Despite their importance, information on stichopus fusiformiossa remains scarce, particularly for aquaculture development. Key aspects such as optimal stocking density, photoperiod responses, feeding performance, and behavioural traits are poorly understood, limiting progress in culture practices. To address these gaps, this study investigated the effects of stocking density and photoperiod on the growth, survival, and feeding behaviour of s. Fusiformiossa under controlled aquaculture conditions. In the stocking density experiment, five treatments (1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 individuals per tank) were tested in triplicate over 14 weeks. In the photoperiod experiment, three regimes were applied: continuous darkness, short photoperiod, and long photoperiod, with five replicates per treatment that were observed hourly over seven days. To increase the robustness of the findings, this photoperiod experiment was repeated on five separate occasions, yielding a total of 25 replicates per treatment. In both experiments, individuals were maintained in a closed aquaculture system and fed daily with a seaweed-based pellet diet.
