Abstract
This dissertation investigates the translation of Culture-Specific Items from Chinese into English in Hong Lou Meng, utilizing a triangulation method that combines text analysis with feedback from translators and readers. Framed by Peter Newmark’s cultural classifications, Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation strategies, House’s Revised Translation Quality Assessment Model, and Justa Holz-Mänttäri’s Translatorial Action Theory, this study analyzes two English translations of Hong Lou Meng. It identifies and classifies 200 CSIs through Newmark’s framework, revealing how cultural elements are handled in translation.
