Abstract
There are many studies regarding job satisfaction in work especially in
teaching due to the prevailing expressions of job dissatisfaction. Teachers'
job satisfaction has a very strong influence on work performance which in turn
affects the students' performance and the education system as a whole. The
purpose of this study was to design an instrument to measure the level of job
satisfaction and dissatisfaction which focuses on teachers in secondary
schools in the Malaysian Peninsular. The literature review discusses factors
both internal and external which influence the level of job satisfactions and
dissatisfactions. The review discusses theories of Taylor (1911 ), Hawthorne
(1939), Lewin (1952), Maslow (1954) Vroom and Decci among others. Both
quantitative and qualitative methods are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on
ethnographic methods; both participant and non-participant observation,
interviews and the survey method i.e. questionnaires. Finally, triangulation is
the method chosen in combination with the ethnographic and survey
approaches in designing the instrument. A questionnaire was designed after a
small pilot study. Limitations of the research instrument and design were also
discussed together with recommendations for future research.
