dc.description.abstract_Diabetes Mellitus is often associated with cardiovascular dysfunction. _Impaired autonomic reflex control of the cardiovascular system is a common feature. However the nature of sympathetic dysfunction in this condition has not been wdl examined. In this study the effects of activating the cells in the intermediolateral cell column (Th1L) of the spinal cord on blood pressure and heart rate of nonnal and chemically induced diabetic rats were investgatecL Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin (65mglkg, I. V) in fasted male Sprague Dawley rats and different parameters were recorded in a comprehensive study to obtain a good diabetic animal model. Groups of diabetic rats were treated with Andrographis paniculata ( H empedu Bumi ), a plant which is reputed to be beneficial for the treatment of diabetes. )irect blood pressure and heart rate were recorded and changes in responses to ntrathecally administered glutamate, 5-hydroxytryptamine, vasopressm, ;ubstance P.. adrenaline and neuropeptide Y noted. Diabetic rats were hypotensive md had lower heart rates compared with control rats. Blood pressure responses to ransmitters were depressed whilst heart rates responses were variable. t il!<•'" ~~· ~ ~0 further series of experiments, the effects of one of the neurotransmitters, ¢Jy. Vasopressin, were tested in diabetic rats treated with the plant. The ~~tt exrract appeared to be capable of reversing the diabetic effects towards control values. .en_US
